From First Job to Career Pathway: Financial Skills Students Need at Every Stage
Sunday July 19, 2026 7:20pm - 8:20pm EDT
Students often encounter careers as a single job title with an average salary, leaving them unprepared to understand how financial decisions, benefits, and opportunities change over time. This interactive session models a classroom strategy that helps students explore careers as progressive pathways rather than one-time choices.

Using a specific career pathway as a model, participants step into the role of students who begin in an entry-level position and make realistic financial decisions related to housing, transportation, healthcare, and daily expenses. Participants then revisit these decisions at later career stages, analyzing how changes in income, benefits, schedules, and job responsibilities expand—or limit—financial options.

Monday July 20, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am EDT
Rubric-based assessment is common across applied and skill-based classrooms, yet teachers often interpret and implement rubrics differently in practice. Drawing on current research in assessment and applied education, participants will examine how structured criteria and professional judgment intersect in real classrooms. Practical strategies will be shared to help teachers refine rubric design, improve alignment with instructional goals, and strengthen assessment practices across Family & Consumer Sciences and career-focused programs.

KFK Workshop to Working Kitchen. Kids Feeding Kids Sparking Community Impact
Monday July 20, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
Last year, I shared my experience from the Kids Feeding Kids workshop in Kansas City and my plans to bring the program home. This year, I’m sharing what happened next.
In Year One, my students integrated service-learning into our working kitchen by producing scalable meals for community distribution while continuing regular brigade rotations, catering, and take-home projects. Using single-batch prototypes, agile retrospectives, and strong student ownership, we developed a model that worked within an existing culinary program.
This session will highlight what worked, what didn’t, and practical strategies for embedding service-learning into a culinary curriculum. Participants will also learn about the framework for a summer educator institute designed to help culinary teachers launch their own Kids Feeding Kids initiative.

Come ready to talk shop about making service-learning operational, not just theoretical.

Personal Finance That Makes Sense: Teaching Money Through the Six Principles of Economic Reasoning
Monday July 20, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm EDT
Personal finance courses often focus on what students should do with money, but not always why those choices make sense. This session shows how the Six Principles of Economic Reasoning provide a powerful framework for teaching personal finance concepts in a way that builds lasting decision-making skills.
Participants will explore how principles such as people choose, choices involve costs, incentives matter, and trade-offs are unavoidable can be applied to everyday financial decisions including budgeting, saving, credit use, investing, insurance, and postsecondary planning. Rather than treating financial topics as isolated skills, this approach helps students see personal finance as a series of economic choices made under constraints.
This session is great for any teacher, middle school or high school, of any subject that wants to find new ways to include personal finance topics and/or economic skills in their class.

Helping Students Make Better Decisions About Careers, Money, and Life
Monday July 20, 2026 2:30pm - 3:30pm EDT
Students get plenty of information about careers and money—but not the tools to make clear, confident decisions. This session helps FCS educators teach a repeatable decision-making framework that students can actually use.
Participants will walk away with a structured approach to help students:
  • Clarify what matters to them
  • Evaluate realistic options
  • Understand trade-offs between income, lifestyle, and goals
  • Move forward without needing perfect answers
The session includes a hands-on activity, "The Real-Life Decision Map," where participants step into a student's role and work through a real-world scenario that requires weighing priorities and making a choice. The tools fit naturally into career exploration, personal finance, and life skills lessons—and into the time and structure teachers are already working with.

Life Skills for Teens- Through a SEL Lens
Monday July 20, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm EDT
Today's students face unprecedented levels of stress, loss, and emotional complexity—often without the skills to navigate them. This session shows how FCS educators can integrate a thanatology-informed approach into Life Planning courses to strengthen students' social-emotional learning and career readiness.
Presented by an FCS educator and thanatologist, the session demonstrates how real-life scenarios involving grief, family change, financial stress, conflict, and major life transitions can become powerful instructional tools within a CTE-aligned framework. Participants will explore how structured discussion, SEL prompts, and peer learning help students examine choices, consequences, and coping strategies in a safe classroom environment.
The result: FCS is positioned as a trauma-aware, workforce-ready discipline that builds employability skills like communication, problem-solving, adaptability, empathy, and responsible decision-making.

Turning Your Teaching Story into Your Leadership Legacy
Monday July 20, 2026 3:45pm - 4:45pm EDT
Teaching is more than a profession—it's a lived narrative shaped by pivotal moments, hard lessons, quiet victories, and opportunities that nearly unfolded. This reflective session invites educators to examine their teaching chronicles and recognize how those experiences have shaped their leadership voice, confidence, and decision-making.
Through guided reflection, participants will identify defining moments from their careers and learn to transform them into intentional leadership practices. Rather than leaving the past behind, educators will claim their story as a source of strength and clarity—and use it as a catalyst for growth, vision, and meaningful leadership.

From Apathy to Accountability - Reframing School as the Workplace
Tuesday July 21, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am EDT
This workshop was born out of a growing and urgent challenge: students refusing to complete assignments, opting for zeros, disengaging from class activities, and exhibiting an overwhelming sense of apathy.
From Apathy to Accountability introduces a practical and transformative approach that reframes school as a simulation of the workplace. Through this lens, students begin to understand that their current behaviors of missing deadlines, refusing collaboration, and opting out of responsibilities have real-world consequences. This mindset shift helps bridge the gap between classroom expectations and life beyond school’s double doors.

From Farm to Table: A Butcher's Craft Demonstration
Tuesday July 21, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am EDT
Some skills never go out of style — and knowing where your food comes from is one of them. In this hands-on demonstration, a professional meat cutter will walk participants through the full arc of hog fabrication, from primal cuts to sub-primal to fabricated and portion-controlled cuts. We'll explore the scope of the meat industry, the role and responsibilities of a butcher, and the foundational principle every culinary professional lives by: mise en place. Participants will also see how each cut is allocated for specific culinary applications, with attention to sanitation practices throughout. Whether you teach food science, culinary arts, or nutrition, you'll leave with fresh perspective — and maybe a new appreciation for the craft behind every chop.

Where Family Science Meets Human Need: Integrating Social Work Perspectives into FCS Education

Family and Consumer Sciences has always been about the whole person — and so has social work. In this session, participants will explore the powerful intersection between FCS education and social work frameworks, building understanding of key concepts and why they belong in our classrooms. We'll examine the social, emotional, and economic factors shaping the lives of our students and their families, and explore practical strategies for supporting student well-being without stepping outside our lane. Participants will also consider how to build intentional collaborative relationships with families, community partners, and available resources. Because FCS educators have always seen the whole child — this session gives us a sharper vocabulary for what we already do.

Teaching with Joy: Empowering Students to Learn, Lead, and Lift Each Other
Tuesday July 21, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
What if your students became the true drivers of their learning by confidently mastering content and teaching others along the way?

In this session, I will share how to transform your classroom into a student-centered environment where learners take ownership and grow into leaders. Through the use of simple, effective strategies like skill drills, “Ask Three Before Me,” and authentic community-building practices, students learn to rely on themselves, support one another, and stay meaningfully connected to their teacher.

These approaches are easy to implement but powerful in impact effectively creating a classroom where it feels like there’s more than one of you in the room. You’ll walk away with practical tools that foster independence, increase engagement, and build a genuine sense of connection without anything feeling forced.

Join me to discover how these three simple shifts can bring more joy to your teaching, help your students feel purposeful in their learning, and empower them to confidently teach and support one another.

Breaking the Cycle Before It Becomes Culture
Tuesday July 21, 2026 1:15pm - 2:15pm EDT
This session invites educators into a deeply reflective journey that blends personal story with professional responsibility.
Drawing from her lived experience with childhood bullying, Kelli Stenhouse shares how early experiences of exclusion, silence, and self-doubt influenced her decision to become a teacher, committed to being the adult she once needed.

Yet, as her career progressed, she encountered a painful realization: the dynamics she experienced as a student reappeared in a different form through workplace bullying, professional trauma, and toxic adult culture within educational environments. Through candid storytelling and thoughtful reflection, Kelli explores the connection between what we endure as children, what we normalize as adults, and what we unknowingly perpetuate in schools. She challenges educators to examine how unresolved experiences shape classroom climates, leadership behaviors, staff relationships, and the systems students learn from every day.

Grounded in the conference theme, Using the Past to Create the Future, this keynote encourages teachers to:
  • Reflect on how personal history influences teaching, leadership, and response to conflict
  • Understand the long-term effects of bullying, from hallways to staff rooms
  • Interrupt harmful patterns by modeling empathy, courage, and accountability
  • Build school environments where psychological safety and belonging are intentional, visible, and protected
This is not a session rooted in blame, but in awareness, healing, and choice. Educators leave empowered to use their past not as a burden, but as insight, leveraging experience to create healthier cultures and safer spaces for the next generation.

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.” This quote by Rachel Carson highlights the important role that adults must have to nurture children’s sense of wonder about the natural world. In this session we will explore how early childhood environmental education (ECEE) has the potential to inspire children’s lifelong learning and love of nature and their affinity for taking care of it.

Bringing History to Life: A Cross-Curricular Exploration of 19th-Century Culture
Wednesday July 22, 2026 10:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Step back in time to experience life as it was in the 1800s. A collaboration between Culinary and English where we provide students with a deeper, more authentic understanding of the historical context surrounding Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave.
The lesson will immerse students in the daily experiences of people living during Frederick Douglass’s time. Through Culinary, students will explore a variety of 19th-century cooking techniques, including brining, baking, and food preservation. Activities will offer a tangible connection to the era, helping students grasp how food preparation reflected both the hardships and ingenuity of the period.
Through this interdisciplinary approach, students will be able to link literature, history, and culture in meaningful ways. By engaging all the senses—seeing, smelling, tasting, and touching—the intent of the lesson is to bring historical study into a living experience.
This collaboration between English, Family and Consumer Science, and Library/Literacy teachers exemplifies how creative teamwork can enrich learning, deepen comprehension, and spark curiosity. The goal is to give students new skills and knowledge and also leave them with a greater appreciation for the resilience and resourcefulness of those who lived in the 19th century.
